State Library Family Event: Waxing with Words with Glenda Millard

Glenda Millard is in Adelaide on a May Gibbs Children's Literature Trust Fellowship.

Families are invited to wander into the tender world of The Duck and the Darklings with author Glenda Millard. In this story of hope, and small acts of kindness, Glenda will guide young listeners through the way carefully chosen words can warm a page, brighten a moment, and help a story find its heart.

Children will hear how she gathers words that feel soft, surprising, or full of promise, and they’ll be encouraged to help imagine new ones—just as Peterboy and his Grandpapa did. Together, families will explore how a single word can shift a feeling, deepen a scene, or make a story glow a little brighter.

The workshop will suit children from 8 to 12 years of age.

All participants must be accompanied by an adult during the workshop.

Date: Wednesday 15th of April, 2026
Time: 10:30am-11:30am
Venue: Institute Building, Circulating Library, State Library of South Australia
Cost: $5.00, booking required

During her literary career, Glenda Millard has published many picture books and children’s novels. An immensely talented author, she has the ability to write across different genres and age groups. Her books are mostly in the genres of children’s books and young adult (YA) novels.

Her first novel is The Naming of Tishkin Silk, which was published in 2003. The book was shortlisted for the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards and CBC Book of the Year Awards. Glenda doesn’t plan the story when she writes a book. When she has an inspiring idea, she just starts writing and the story develops.
